A eulogy is a tribute or speech given at a memorial or funeral service about the loved one who as passed on. They are typically written and delivered by a family member, friend or the minister or celebrant.

Giving a eulogy is an opportunity to share your thoughts, feelings and memories about the life and type of person your loved one was. It is a very personal way to say goodbye.

When preparing a eulogy, there are some things you should consider:

  • Audience – who will be attending the service (family, friends, work colleagues).
  • Tone – the tone of the eulogy may depend on the personality, sense of humour and age of the loved one who has passed. A eulogy doesn’t always have to be serious.
  • Collect ideas – Speak to family and friends who knew them well to gather stories and anecdotes to share, or look through old photos, emails or personal items.
  • Content – Using a timeline of life highlights and significant milestones can help to reflect on the persons life. Providing a personal view with stories or anecdotes can also help the audience connect in a different way.
  • Flow – Provide structure to your speech by making sure it has a beginning, middle and an end.
  • Review and practice – Practise and your review speech around close family and friends. It can be helpful to read it out loud a few times before the day.

Rememberbeing asked to give a eulogy is a great honour and should be treated accordingly.

It was such an emotional time for us but your professionalism and compassion helped enormously.

I haven’t been through this process before but it wasn’t upsetting as both Julie and Jo gave us such support and nothing was too much trouble.

I would definitely recommend you after our experience.

The team, especially Asha and Tom, are wonderful people to work with. They provided professional, compassionate guidance through the funeral planning process, and my dad’s service was exactly how we envisioned. I would recommend you to anybody who finds themselves in the unfortunate position of needing to plan a funeral.

Not only were you all very patient but showed compassion in this difficult time. Tom we thank you and all your wonderful staff. The women looked so beautiful on the day and we were all touched at how everything fell into place. We think Dad would have been honoured.

The funeral service that you put together was absolutely perfect and was exactly what mum would have wanted. Please know that if I ever need a funeral director again you will be my first call.
